Hiked on Saturday 12/5 Starting on the Van Hoevenberg Trail from the Adirondack Loj or near Heart Lake, the trail is easy until you reach Marcy Dam. Nice trail. Greylock can be seen for miles around, and is a quite impressive site given that is rises nearly 2,700 feet above the surrounding town of Adams, Massachusetts. Spikes needed once you’re about half way up, slabs of rock were completely covered in ice. There is a well developed herd path leading from Lake Tear of the Clouds but it is sometimes hard to find the start. Be mindful of all the fallen leaves. It was colder for sure on the summit base but manageable, and wind was moderate, the main issue was the lack of orientation and unsure footing due to heavier than expected snow cover on the ground and snow drifts. Be sure to tread lightly, though, as Marcy is home to endangered alpine vegetation. It was a snow whiteout, low cloud cover, zero visibility of any peaks. Spikes are needed after Indian falls enough ice on rock faces to turn you back down if you don’t have. Between peaks on the range, trails drop, seemingly forever, making following the chain a grueling experience, while on either side of the line, the mountains drop from summit to valley in cascades of steep rock. As everyone mentions trail is wet and muddy but there’s enough logs to help navigate. I enjoyed this trail because it gave you a view, was a loop, well maintained, not many other trail options so you didn’t have to keep checking the map, and had a good elevation change to making it more of a hike than just a walk. It’s located between two homes so it’s not very wide. Visibility was really bad as I started to ascend and it only got worse, footing was precarious because often what I thought were rocks along the trail would be a 2-3 foot deep snow drift.
